Chapter Twenty
As soon as I show up in my dream palace, I make my hair fiery, grab Pom, and teleport to the tower of sleepers.
âShe looks just like you,â Pom says, flitting around as I lean over my sister.
âWant to come meet her?â I ask.
He turns purple and nods so vigorously I worry he might hurt his neck.
Smiling, I take his paw in my left hand and touch Ashaâs wrist.
I stare around in confusion.
Instead of Ashaâs dreams, Iâm back in my dream palace lobby.
Or not.
The colors differ, my collection of impossible shapes isnât here, but the basic layout is the same.
Also, Asha is here, gaping at Pom, whoâs hovering over me.
âWhere are we?â I ask her.
âI call this my dream castle,â she says proudly. âNow what the heck is that?â She points at Pom.
I hastily explain about Pom and then say, âYour castle looks just like my palace.â
âYour what?â
âThe place I appear when I first go into the dream world of another person,â I say. âItâs also where I go when I realize Iâm dreaming myself.â
She blinks. âItâs the same for me. I realized I was dreaming, remembered why, and waited for you here.â
I take a closer look at my surroundings.
Colors and shapes aside, every tile and every piece of marble is the same as in my dream palace. Up in the ceiling is the exact same mosaic depicting an archery-target-like mandala made out of multicolored glass.
The main difference is that she calls hers a castle.
âWe mustâve designed this together as children.â I stroke Pomâs fur as he lands on my shoulder. âBefore the memory loss.â
She hesitantly approaches and touches Pomâs ear. âIt has to be that.â
âDoes yours also have a tower of sleepers?â Pom asks, his huge lavender eyes glued to my sister. âAnd a memory gallery?â
I explain what those are, and Asha grins widely, then takes us to a clone of my tower of sleepers, only larger.
âThatâs a lot of connections,â I say, examining the never-ending floors. âAnd theyâre all asleep right now.â
âThose are my fellow Escapists,â she says.
Ah, right. She woke up ahead of schedule.
I take her to my tower of sleepers, and she canât believe how alike they are, size aside.
I show her my memory gallery next, and she takes us to her version.
The paintings are obviously different, as are the memories they replay, but the layout of the room itself is the same. Ditto for the style of the frames and the floors.
âCan I experience some of your memories?â Asha asks shyly.
My pulse speeds up. âCan I see yours?â
She nods excitedly, and we spend a while sharing our best memories. I get to experience some truly amazing thingsâlike giving birth and nursing a babyâas well as countless precious moments with Bebe.
âThank you,â Asha says after sheâs done with the last memory in my gallery, the one where I broke a vase that later turned out to have prints of both Ashaâs and my hands. âI feel like I just got to know our mother.â
I pet Pomâs furry feet.
